Traditional governance structures have existed long before local government. Can they complement new democratic governance and make it more effective, easier and familiar for people to follow and facilitate better service delivery?
CLGF in collaboration with UNDP Pacific Centre, the Foundation of the South Pacific International (FSPI), University of the South Pacific (USP) and the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat (PIFS) is undertaking research to identify traditional governance systems in Pacific Island cultures and see whether or not they can co-exist in harmony with the modern governance system, and if not how they could be harmonised to complement each other to promote good governance.
The research will start with seven member countries and be coordinated by FSPI. A steering committee consisting of all partners will coordinate and monitor the outcomes. The research will start with a workshop as part of the CLGF Pacific Project Technical Advisory Panel meeting in November and in country soon after.
