Effective intergovernmental relations 01 November 2007
Kiribati and Tuvalu were the first countries to run seminars to strengthen effective intergovernmental relations within different governance structures so that they can work always as partners in development.
The seminars are part of CLGF’s work to facilitate closer working relationship between the national, local and traditional leaders to create stronger working partnership between them. The seminar lasted for two days: 40 people attended the seminar in Funafuti (Tuvalu) and more that 150 people attended the one in Tarawa (Kiribati) including all levels of government - Members of Parliament, local government and traditional leaders, and civil society. In the case of Kiribati women and youth were also involved in the process
The event provided a venue and safe space for different level of government to come together to dialogue on issues concerning the people and the forum allows for Central Government to work in partnership with communities on issues concerning them. It provided an opportunity for central government to listen and explain some of the principles and policies that are in place and gave  the community a chance to question existing policies and contribute their views.
Similar seminars will be held in other countries during the next plan period.
